Pasture raised versus free range
Our chickens are pasture raised, meaning they spend their days outdoors in the sunshine among the olive trees, scratching for bugs, seeds and grasses in addition to their non-GMO grain based feed. The main difference between Free Range and Pasture Raised is movement. Pasture Raised means the birds, and their mobile structures, are moved to fresh pasture daily. Free-Range chickens are given limited access to the outdoors, spending most of their time inside a fixed structure like a shed or chicken house.
Pasture Raised and beyond: Typically, pasture raised chickens are kept in mobile cages, but we have taken Pasture Raised to the next level by keeping our birds within mobile electric fencing and the mobile shelters are moved daily within the fencing. Firstly, this allows the chickens more space and secondly it allows them to move around under the trees where most of the bugs, seeds and greens are while keeping predators, like Honey Badgers, at bay.
The olive groves of Oryx Ridge Farm are farmed with organic fertilisers and no herbicides or chemical pesticides are used.
